THE Surf Camp
HOSTED BY: TheSportsRooster and Jimmy B.
This year’s surf camp went leaps and bounds beyond what any other camp has done. The location was god send for the vision that was stuck in my head. Starting with my mom’s little motel sitting high on a natural dune and nestled between the ocean and intracoastal with a tiki hut in the front yard and a mini half pipe for skating in the back yard. We offered a full package with surfing, skating, ping pong, surf videos, karaoke, crabbing, snacks and beverages, DVD’s with camp memories, relay races, surf contest, skate contest, and goodie bags.
In the beginning of the summer TheSportsRooster staff and I were getting a little nervous because we didn’t have but a few kids signed up. At this point we had already put so much energy, work, and money to make sure this would be the best camp around. The first five weeks we did not have enough kids to run a weeklong camp. I was approached by one of my good friends Will Tant about putting on a surf clinic on the 4th of July to help raise money for the JR Life Guard program. This was A great Idea and for a good cause. This was also a great opportunity for me to let all the participants parents know about the surf camp. And sure enough the word was out and the camp filled up for the next 5 weeks.
The first day of camp was so awesome, just watching the car loads of kids pull up and unloading there surf and skate gear with a grin from ear to ear. The skate ramp was a huge hit as it was always the first thing that just about all the campers would do when getting dropped off. The parents were just so happy to see that their kids were finally in a camp that they really wanted to be at. Mondays always seemed to start off a little slow as we would go over some rules and guidelines along with an introduction of grommet campers.
As the days would go on the Kids would constantly compare THE Surf Camp to Fuel TV’s Camp Woodward. So we decided to make it a little more exciting by adding a slip and slide from the top of the dune to the bottom going into a homemade artesian pond. We tricked this slide out so awesome adding curves with banks and levitating drops which would allow you to have plenty of speed to make a big splash. Are relay races were also a big hit. The first one was called the surf-in chicken race. We would pick 2 team captains and create 2 teams. The teams then would come up with a team name and pecking order of who would go first to last. The rules were simple; a team member would run out into the water and catch one wave. For the wave to count they would have to stand up and ride a wave in. Then run up to flour box and roll around like a piece of chicken for five seconds and then tag their team mates’ hand. I think we should have changed the name to the surf-in biscuit race because that is exactly what they looked like - a bunch of biscuits. The best part of the race for me was when one team was yelling to the other team “we won!”And then I announced that both teams won and there all getting a free pair of volcom socks. Needless to say they were freaking out. It’s hard to believe that we could top off the surf-in chicken race until we had the same type style relay race with 24 gallons of jello. Now that was cool!
In the end of the week the campers would receive a DVD with video and still picture high lights compliments of TheSportsRooster staff along with goodie bags stuffed with some serious hard ware such as anarchy sunglasses and volcome gear, complements of anarchy rep Greg Taylor and Volcome rep and team captain Daniel Terry. The Surf Camp was such a success that we were able to fill up the rest of the summer and had kids coming for five straight weeks. So in a nut shell - The waves were fun, the kids were the funny, and the relay races were the funniest!
Thank you to all of the parents and kids who supported and referred the camp to others, and to all of the sponsors(Anarchy,TheSportsRooster.com,Sully's surf shop,Volcom) who stoked the kids out with the hefty goodie bags, and to the Si Como No Inn for letting us use their establishment, and to my sponsor TheSportsRooster.com and staff for their support throughout the whole summer.
